In simple terms: RouteGems is proudly built on open data and open-source software. This page credits the projects that make it possible.

Map data

© OpenStreetMap contributors. Map data used throughout RouteGems — the base map, the routing network, and amenity information — is derived from OpenStreetMap, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. OpenStreetMap is built by a global community of mappers; if you find an error, please consider fixing it at openstreetmap.org so every map user benefits.

Map tiles and imagery

  • Standard map tiles — © OpenStreetMap contributors, served by the OpenStreetMap Foundation.
  • Terrain tiles — © OpenTopoMap (CC-BY-SA), based on OpenStreetMap data and SRTM elevation data.
  • Satellite imagery — © Esri — Source: Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics, served via the Esri World Imagery service.

Amenity data

Food, water, shelter and other amenity information is queried from OpenStreetMap data, in part via the Overpass API. © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL.

Geocoding

Place-name search is powered by Photon, an open-source geocoder by komoot, using OpenStreetMap data.

Elevation data

Elevation profiles and climb figures use open elevation datasets served as Terrain Tiles via the AWS Open Data programme (Mapzen Skadi format), incorporating NASA SRTM and other public elevation sources. NASA SRTM data is in the public domain.

Weather data

Weather forecasts shown in the planner — the along-route forecast, and the rain and wind map layers — are provided by Open-Meteo, an open-data weather API combining national weather-service models. Weather data © Open-Meteo, available under CC BY 4.0. Forecasts are predictions, not guarantees — see our Safety Disclaimer.

Routing

Routing is computed by a self-hosted instance of GraphHopper (open source, Apache License 2.0), using a routing graph built from OpenStreetMap extracts provided by Geofabrik.

Software

RouteGems also stands on excellent open-source software, including MapLibre GL JS (map rendering, BSD-3-Clause), PostgreSQL and PostGIS (spatial database), and many other open-source libraries acknowledged in our source dependencies.

RouteGems is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by these companies; names are used only to identify compatibility and the device connections you can choose to make.

Your use of this data

Data displayed in or exported from RouteGems that derives from the sources above remains subject to their licences. In particular, substantial reuse of OpenStreetMap-derived data must comply with the ODbL, including attribution to OpenStreetMap contributors.
