Safety Disclaimer

Last updated: 18 July 2026

In simple terms: RouteGems plans routes; you ride them. Every riding decision — whether a road is safe, whether the weather is rideable, whether you have enough water — is yours.

This disclaimer forms part of our Terms & Conditions. Please read it before relying on any route.

Routes are suggestions, not guarantees

RouteGems generates routes automatically from community-maintained mapping data. We do not guarantee that any route is safe, legal, accessible, open, rideable or suitable for you. Roads close. Bridges wash out. Tracks get gated. Land access changes. Diversions appear overnight. None of that is always reflected in mapping data.

Before you ride

  • Assess yourself honestly — your fitness, experience, and bike-handling for the terrain involved.
  • Check the weather — along the whole route, not just the start. Where RouteGems displays
  • weather (forecasts along your route, and rain/wind map layers on some plans), these are third-party predictions supplied by Open-Meteo: they are estimates, they become less reliable the further ahead you look, and conditions in hills, on coasts and in changeable weather can differ sharply from any forecast. Always check an official forecast and severe-weather warnings (in the UK, the Met Office) before and during a long ride — never rely on RouteGems alone.

  • Check daylight — routes don't know when the sun sets.
  • Prepare your bike — roadworthy, appropriate tyres for the surfaces expected.
  • Carry enough — food, water, spares, tools, appropriate clothing, lights, and emergency equipment appropriate to how remote the ride is.
  • Verify critical stops — water points, shops and accommodation shown in RouteGems come from community data and may have closed, moved or changed hours. For remote riding, verify anything you depend on.

While you ride

  • Obey the law — traffic laws, local regulations, and signage always take priority over any route we suggest.
  • Respect access — private land, permissive paths and rights of way. A line on a map is not a right to ride.
  • Never navigate blindly — if the route ahead looks wrong, dangerous or closed, it probably is. Stop and reassess.
  • Carry a backup — never rely solely on RouteGems (or any single device or app) for navigation. Battery packs die, devices break, signal disappears.
  • Stop when conditions turn — heat, storms, flooding, ice, exhaustion. No route is worth riding into danger.

Not an emergency service

RouteGems is not an emergency navigation or safety system. It must not be relied upon in any situation where failure, inaccuracy or unavailability could lead to injury, death, or property damage. In an emergency in the UK, call 999.

Exported files

GPX and FIT files are generated automatically and may contain errors. Devices interpret them differently — course points can shift, and off-route recalculation varies by device. Familiarise yourself with the route before riding it, not during.

Ride far. Ride smart. Come home.
